Cedar Decks Coquitlam
When looking to build a landscaping structure in the backyard, cedar is one of the preferred choices. It has an incredible natural scent and a warm colour tone that shows off its natural look. Cedar also contains a substance which makes it naturally resistant to moisture, rot, and insects. This is a must have for our climate that receives a lot of precipitation and has fairly warm summer months. With these properties, if your deck is installed by a professional contractor and you keep up with your maintenance work, your deck can easily last you 20+ years and maybe even longer. Maintenance work is an important aspect of deck upkeep as it is constantly exposed to the elements. Maintenance includes cleaning your deck and sealing it every few years to extend your decks lifespan and to help preserve the natural colour (colour can fade from UV rays). If you prefer not to do as much maintenance work, having your deck covered with a patio cover could be a great option as you will protect your deck from precipitation and UV rays. If you decide to go with cedar, there are a couple options to go with. The premium cedar is called "clear cedar" as it has very few impurities and knots in the wood. The more budget friendly option is called "knotty cedar" as it has more grain variations and knots throughout the wood. Cedar decks are a timeless look and one of our preferred materials to constructing a custom deck.

Pressure Treated Wood Decks Maple Ridge
If you want a wood deck but don't want to pay up for cedar, pressure treated wood could be a budget friendly option for you. Out of the deck materials that are available, pressure treated wood is typically the cheapest option out there. This material is made from softwood lumber like pine and fir and is infused with preservatives to keep it protected from the elements. The softwood and the preservatives are put into a pressure tank to be infused into the wood which is where the name comes from. The preservative typically contains copper which fends off many types of insects and fungi. During this process, it actually makes the wood "harder" which mean it will be a bit more durable than cedar. Regular maintenance work is required with this material and will typically involve more work than other types of word. A pressure treated deck should last you anywhere from 15-20+ years. Something that you should consider is while the upfront cost for pressure treated wood is cheaper than other materials, the time and resources spent on maintenance work can add up over time.

Hardwood Deck Maple Ridge
Another premium alternative to cedar is hardwood decking. There are several different types of hardwood you can choose from such as Tigerwood, Red Balua, and IPE just to name a few. Hardwoods will typically contain a similar substance to cedar that make it resistant to insects and rot. These properties make it an excellent choice for our climate. Hardwoods usually have a bolder colour and can really be a statement piece for your property. This material is very durable and is "harder" than the softwoods that are available to choose from. We definitely would not recommend it but hardwood decks could even withstand patio furniture being dragged across it. The maintenance work for hardwood involves oiling the surface to help preserve its colour. When installing a hardwood deck, there are some extra labour costs involved due to special prep and installation work that needs to occur. These decks can last for over 25 years with care and maintenance and are typically more durable than a cedar deck.
