After Maple Deck Builders has finished constructing your custom deck for you, we can also add some secondary pieces to your landscape as well. Two structures that are quite unique and can add a little bit of extravagance to your yard is an arbor or pergola. The names for these two are used pretty interchangeably as they are similar but they are two distinct landscaping structures. Lets take a look at the differences and see which could be a better fit for your property.
Pergola - Pergolas are typically larger in size than an arbor as they are made to fit over decks and patios to create an enclosure from the elements. They can be made from a couple different materials such as wood, metal, or even vinyl. Pergolas can be connected to another structure like your house or be built on its own. The general outline of a pergola is that its built with four or more posts/columns that act as pillars of support for the structure. The roof section is either designed with a crisscross pattern or made of beams and slats. You can create a shaded are for your pergola through climbing plants and vines or install covers like linen, shades, or bamboo. If you want extra privacy on the side, you can also add a lattice design as well. The main function of a pergola is to create an outdoor living space that you are able to utilize and enjoy. Seating can be installed during the construction or after the fact. If you want to create a little ambiance, you can install lighting as fixed lighting or hanging lights. There are no limitation on you want to customize your pergola. Arbor -Arbors are built a little smaller than pergolas and is thought more as a seating area for your garden. A pergola is more of an outdoor room where an arbor acts more as an outdoor entrance/doorway. They can be freestanding but can also be supported by a fence as well. If you want to create a bit of a secluded feel for your garden, you can even install a gate along with your arbor. Many of our clients incorporate a seating area into their design as a way to sit and appreciate their garden. Traditional arbors have lattice designs which allows for vines and climbing plants to grow. The team at Maple Ridge Deck Builders has built many arbors and pergolas along with the custom decks that we have constructed. While these structures may not seem like much, they can be a addition to your yard. If you are in the market for a custom landscaping solution, give our team a call for a free consultation. |
